Playing With Fido

May 17, 2022

Does your pooch get super excited when you come home with a new toy? Fido is super cute when he’s feeling playful! While tossing a toy to your furry friend isn’t exactly rocket science, there are a few rules of thumb to go by when it comes to doggy playtime. A Roswell, NM vet lists some of them below.

Make It A Daily Thing

Our canine pals tend to thrive on steady schedules. They also need daily stimulation and activity. Try to take time to play with Fido every day, even if it’s just for a few minutes.

Choose The Right Toys

It’s important to pick toys that are the right size for your furry bff. Fido could hurt himself on things made for larger or smaller dogs!

Don’t Overdo It

Dogs often push themselves to please their humans, which makes it easy for them to overexert themselves. Keep an eye on Fido, and watch for signs of fatigue. If he starts looking tired, give him some water and let him relax.

Customize It

Our canine buddies come in all shapes and sizes, and their playtime activities should reflect that. Talk to your vet about what is and isn’t right for your furry pal. For instance, brachycephalic pups shouldn’t be encouraged to run or swim, while many larger breeds shouldn’t jump or stand on their back legs. Check with your vet, and look into Fido’s breed information, if you know it.

Pick A Safe Spot

Don’t play with your four-legged friend near potential hazards, such as grills, stairways, pools, fireplaces, or areas with a lot of small/sharp items. Ideally, you want to choose a spot with a soft surface, like a lawn or carpet.

Don’t Encourage Aggression

Not all types of play are right for every pooch. If your canine friend has any type of aggressive tendencies, he may get a little too involved with certain toys, games, or activities. Tug O War, for example, isn’t a great option for feisty pups.

Have Fun With It

Don’t think of doggy playtime as a chore. That’s no fun! This can be just as enjoyable for you as it is for your pet. Plus, playing games like Fetch and Tag give you a chance to get outdoors and get moving.
