Summer Cat Care Tips

June 1, 2022

Summer is coming soon! Of course, it’s probably safe to say that your feline pal’s daily schedule of naps, beauty sessions, yoga, meals, and meditation will stay the same no matter what season it is. However, you will want to take a few precautions to keep your kitty cool and purring over the next few months. After all, Fluffy is wearing a fur coat! A local Roswell, NM vet discusses summer cat care in this article.

Water, Water, Water

Overheating is a serious risk for our furry friends in summer. Fluffy can only sweat through her paws, and panting doesn’t do much as far as cooling her off. Make sure your kitty always has fresh water available. You may want to get her a little pet fountain: many cats prefer to drink running water.

Brushing

Dead hair, dust and dander can all inhibit the insulating qualities of Fluffy’s pretty coat. While cats are good at cleaning themselves, they can use some help in this area. Brush your feline buddy regularly to keep her fur nice and clean.

Parasite Control

Summer is a high time for fleas, ticks, and mosquitos, all of which can carry both dangerous diseases and other parasites. Keep up with Fluffy’s wellness care! Follow your vet’s recommended appointment schedule.

Cool Snacks

Who doesn’t enjoy a cold treat on a sweltering afternoon? Fluffy may appreciate having some chilled wet food, or a frozen lickable treat. You can also make her a kitty slushie by combining kibble, tuna, and ice in a blender.

Comfy Bed

Kitties are quite easy keepers. Fluffy will spend most of her time sleeping. Offer your drowsy pet some cool beds. Hammock beds are a good option. You can also try pointing a fan at Fluffy’s bed. Just make sure it can’t fall over on her.

Keep Kitty In

The best way to keep Fluffy safe? Ground her! As soon as your feline companion sets her adorable paws outside, she’s exposed to some very serious dangers, such as traffic, weather, and wild animals. If you want to give her a taste of the outdoors, make her a catio. All you need are some pet-safe plants, a window or screened porch with a good view, and, of course, some kitty furniture. Instant purr!
