Keeping Your Pup Hydrated

August 2, 2022
Summer is here! Many of our canine patients love this time of year. After all, Fido gets to sniff all the grass, roll around, and run and play outside. All that activity can be dangerous in the heat, though. You’ll need to make sure to keep your pet properly hydrated. A local Roswell, NM vet offers some tips on this below.

Water Stations

First and foremost, make sure that your furry pal always has access to fresh water. You may want to refill the bowl a few times on hot days. If you have more than one pooch and/or a large yard, you’ll need more than one watering station.

Automated Waterers

Another thing you may want to consider is getting an automated waterer. This is a good option for people who are out long hours, or those whose dogs tend to drain their bowls quickly.

Fountains

Many of our canine buddies prefer to drink running water. This makes sense, as in the wild, stagnant water is much more likely to be contaminated than fresh water is. Get your furry friend a fountain!

Snacks!

Pick snacks that have a high moisture content. Doggy ice cream can be a good option for Fido on hot summer days. You can also offer your cute pet some pupsicles, or chilled wet food over ice.

Broth

Sodium-free broth is a good thing to have on hand. It contains electrolytes, which can help keep your pooch hydrated. You can even try freezing some in freezer molds or ice-cube trays.

Food

Canned food and dry food both have pros and cons. One of the benefits of canned food is that it does have higher moisture content. Ask your vet for more information.

Out And About

Many of our canine pals love to explore parks, trails, and other spots with their humans. Always bring water along for your furry buddy when taking him on adventures. Don’t let your pup slurp water out of streams, ponds, or puddles: it may not be safe!

Splish Splash

Does Fido like swimming? Make sure he always has fresh water available at the pool or swimming hole. Try not to let him drink from the pool, though: chlorine and other chemicals are definitely not things you want your pooch ingesting.
