Bringing a new cat into your home can be very exciting and fun … for you. For Fluffy, going to a new home can be scary and stressful. You’ll need to take a few steps to help get your feline pal started out on the right paw in her new home. A Roswell, NM vet offers some advice on bonding with Fluffy below.
The Glamorous Life
The first thing you want to do is make your home comfy, safe, and fun for your kitty. Offer lots of beds and napping spots, so your furry little pal can do what cats do best: lounge about. Fluffy also needs toys and pet furniture.
Don’t do anything that may frighten or annoy Fluffy. A trip to the vet is definitely on the agenda, but aside from that, just let her be. This will go a long way towards helping her feel safe and settled.
Talk to your feline friend in a friendly, happy tone of voice. She won’t know what you’re saying, but that doesn’t really matter. The key is to just help her get used to your voice. Fluffy will also pick up a lot from your tone. You may notice her reacting, perhaps by coming to you or even just flicking her tail.
Give It Time
Cats can take quite a bit of time to get used to major changes. While some kitties will immediately hop into your lap for purrs and snuggles, others need time to warm up. Let Fluffy have the space she needs to get settled.
Cats can be pretty mysterious in some ways. However, they can also be pretty clear: it’s just a matter of learning how to understand them. Do some research into kitty body language!
Kitties can be very affectionate, but cuddle time always has to happen on their terms. You can coax your cute pet by talking to her and holding out treats, but don’t overstep. Never force attention on Fluffy, and don’t hold her or pick her up if she isn’t feeling it. Always let your kitty come to you. (Fluffy may ignore you when you’re watching TV and ready to cuddle, and demand attention when you’re busy, but that’s another topic.)
