Is Your Cat Bored?

August 1, 2023

Did you know that boredom can be a big problem for cats? We know, Fluffy seems to really enjoy doing as little as possible. However, even the laziest furball can’t sleep all the time. Kitties need something to do when they’re awake! A local Roswell, NM vet discusses kitty boredom below.

Do Cats Get Bored?

Boredom may seem like more of a life goal than a problem for many cats. Our feline pals spend a rather ridiculous amount of time sleeping and just lounging around. However, keep in mind that Fluffy is both predator and prey by nature, and she’s definitely a lion at heart. That means she’s hardwired to be alert, curious, and a bit nosy. She also has a deep-seated instinctive need to practice her pounces.

Warning Signs

Fluffy can’t tell you that she’s bored, but that doesn’t mean she won’t give off clues. You may notice behavioral changes. Your feline friend may be super clingy when you’re home. Or, she may engage in unusual behaviors. For instance, she may lick or groom herself incessantly, scratch or soil inappropriately, or act restless. She may also eat more than she should. Kitties are just as prone to boredom snacking as people are! Severe distress can cause gastrointestinal upset, such as vomiting and diarrhea. Keep in mind that all of these things can also be signs of medical issues. Call your vet right away if you notice any of them.

What To Do

Fortunately, it really isn’t hard to keep your kitty entertained. First and foremost, offer her lots of toys. She should have some that she can use by herself, as well as things you can play with together, such as wand toys or laser pointers. Even taking five minutes a day to entertain your furry little friend can make a huge difference.

Does your feline buddy stays home while you go to work? There are also things you can do to make her alone time better, such as leaving a light and radio on for her. A good window seat will also keep Fluffy entertained. Cats can spend hours lounging, sunbathing, and birdwatching! Last but not least, offer your kitty furniture to climb and things to explore, such as boxes, paper bags, and newspaper tunnels.
